When I first started in the ministry, I ran into a man that was going through a very rough time. He looked at me and said, “My life is a mess and I just don’t know what to do.” I started just asking him questions. It turned out that he was in the middle of a divorce. Not only were him and his wife partners in life, but they were also partners in their business of real-estate development. He had been to his minister and to a marriage counselor. Nothing had worked for him.
I asked him, “What do you think the answer is?” He gave me an answer. I asked him, “What do you think the best answer is for you and your wife?” He gave me an answer for that as well. We continued on that way for probably 20-25 minutes. I told him that his answers made sense to me. He was so thankful. He said I was the best counselor he had ever been to.
As I was getting in my car to leave, I thought what did I say that was so great. Then it hit me. I didn’t say anything. The answer was in him the entire time. He just needed someone to help massage the answer out of him.
I can’t tell you how it works, but there is a communication system inside of us. It has worked so many times for me. When we were planning the National Convention for 2005, we were having the hardest time coming up with topics to speak on. One morning, I sat down with a pen and paper and began to write. I kept writing more and more as fast as I could. Before I knew it, I had Thursday, Friday, and Saturday all planned out. We had a meeting later that day about the Convention. I told them what I had sketched out and the answers began to just pour out of us. We had solved our problem and ended up having a great Convention.
It doesn’t matter what it is you’re facing. If you would just sit and slow down. Just stop talking. Quit complaining and acting like it’s the end of the world. Be still and listen for the answer inside of you.
I like to go to a special place when I’m doing this. It can be anywhere that you can escape from the world. In my spot, I know there is an answer to my problem. I just have to figure out what it is inside of me.
Some people think I’m old fashioned, but you also have to put the right things into your mind. I don’t fill my mind with soap operas or movies. When you have that in your mind, it’s hard to come out with the right answers.
Fill your mind with good stuff. If you come to a bump in the road, it’s easy to confuse answers with something you may have seen in a movie. I want you to read the right books and listen to the right tapes. This way you have a good filter in your mind to ensure the right answer will always come out.
Listen to yourself and take your time when you’re dealing with a problem. Go to your special place with a pen and paper. The answer is within us. We just need to slow down long enough to hear it. – Coach
